Vertical
Kampung is an interesting idea as available land for housing in Jakarta shrinks
by day. Going vertical is solution, but we need to be sure about what option to
take. There are rusunami (low cost
apartments) and rusunami (low-cost
rental apartments).
Apartments have
now become desirable commodities but unaffordable. Younger urban generations experiment
with shared living space to cut down on expenses. One of the underlining
problems with apartments that administration is addressing is how to ensure
that residents do not lose their
livelihoods after moving into an apartment.
Many kampung
improvement programs that were meant to be community base redevelopment but
had turned into top down projects with government
employees failing to communicate with residents.
Vertical Kampung are planned as inexpensive apartment complexes with dedicated public and commercial spaces. A kampung has a very elastic usage of space. An open area- like it narrow alley or a small field - can turn into a nursing area, a children's playing area and a clothes drying area.
Going vertical is one possibility, but not the only possibility. we need to make sure that the social reality and the people within the kampung ca go vertical. This is important.
